The first assignment for my anatomy drawing class is the rib cage and that just happens to be the hardest bone to draw, so I guess it should all be easy from here on out (just kidding, this class is going to be far from easy). I wish my rib cage was better, but I am impressed that I was able to get this much and that it is recognizable as a rib cage even if there are a lot of mistakes.
Today was a fun and busy day in the art building. It started with my first anatomy drawing class at 8:00am. I am excited about this class because I know it is a skill that I really need to know and will be able to use always, but I am really intimidated by the course load and I just am afraid I will do horribly.
After anatomy drawing I had my senior seminar class. Here we are going to be working on our art concentrations and discussing what the true meaning of art is. I did have a little bit of distress in this class because I found out that there might be a little glitch in where my senior show will be held. The gallery where I thought it was going to be might be under construction in December which would be a problem. We are trying to figure out where else I would be able to hang it. Hopefully it won't be too long before we figure it out so I can plan it all out.
When senior sem was over I was able to get some painting done. I always forget how much I enjoy painting until I am doing it again. It can be frustrating and complicated but in the end I love every moment I am painting. I was able to get
a good layer down on the painting of Black Mountain Sunset. I am really excited about this painting and I am also very encouraged about it because everyone who has seen it likes it. People think that it can stay just the way it is but I hope to make it even better. Hopefully I wont destroy it. Speaking of destroying things, I did work on my Destroying Beauty painting that I had started this spring. I am trying to finish the ants, but I am afraid that I am ruining it. I kinda wish I had just left it as a painting of a butterfly but now I have to go through with the original idea.At 3:00 I had ceramics III which I am super excited about because it is a really small class and it is mainly self directed except that we have group critique which are really helpful while working on pieces. I will have to be focusing on some specific things so as to get really good at a small number of things rather than just ok at a lot of things. During class I learned how to re-process clay that needs to be softened and I also learned how to mix new clay out of the scraps we recycle. These things were very necessary for me to learn since I will be one of the studio assistants this semester. That means I will be processing the studio clay for the ceramics I students (the ceramics II and III students can still use it, but we tend to use higher end boxed clays). I am also excited because my teacher wants the assistants to experiment with new glaze recipes for cone 6 firings. He wants to find good glazes for the lower firing so that we could save energy. Making glazes is one of my favorite things about ceramics, so I am really excited that I am going to get paid to do it.
So, today was busy but a lot of fun. I really enjoy the work I get to do and I just hope that I get to continue to do it for a long time to come. I also that I don't get too overwhelmed and start to not enjoy it so much
.In the afternoon I was able to actually get some work started. I am hoping to get a lot of paintings done this semester so I am glad I got to start early. These are four of the many painting I will be doing. The pink one that is made up eight small canvases will be a large red hibiscus flower. The little yellow one is a close up of an orchid that will be part of a series of three different angles of the orchid. The other two are landscapes that have to do mainly with the sky. I am super excited to painting again and I am excited for tomorrow when I will be starting ceramics again.
So, I thought I would share with you what my townhouse looks like so I filmed a tour of it but I want you to remember that I am not a filming kind of person so you will have to bare with my awful camera skills and uninteresting narration. Ok, with that said, I hope you enjoy this view of my town house:
I made it to Houghton last night. All my flights went well, I got my suitcases without problem, and the drive home was great (except that Dunkin' Donuts was out of donuts). When I got to to my townhouse some of my house mates were still up and able to show me which room was mine. My roommate is not here yet, but she has already moved in. It's good that she's not here yet so that I was able to stay up late getting stuff out and unpacking without waking her up. I was also able to make a huge mess while unpacking without annoying anyone else. I have been able to unpack everything rather quickly because my friend brought all of my boxes of stuff from out storage unit up to my room. I was surprised because he had just said that he was going to get my blankets so that I could sleep my first night, but I guess he was feeling generous with his time and efforts. Four out of my six house mates are already here and have been here for awhile so they have already set up most of the house, being the kitchen, living room, and bathrooms. I am rather amazed at all the space we have. So far I am really loving my townhouse.
Today I spent a large part of the day unpacking and setting up my room. I am amazed at how much room I have and how I do not have enough stuff to fill it up. I am only using half of my closet and my dresser isn't full either. I guess I don't have as much stuff as I thought. After I was done getting my room in order I decided to take a walk up to campus. Everything looks so different to me because I have never been here in the fall when everything is flourishing. The walk was beautiful because it had rained most of the morning and everything was wet and cool, a real big different from back home. Well, the rain started up again shortly after I had started. I didn't mind, I love the rain. I made it up to the art building which was weird to see empty. I found out that I won't be able to pick out my painting loft until Monday at 8am, so I am planning on being there early to insure that I get the spot I want, which is the only spot with a window that opens.
So, I am really excited about being back and am looking forward to this new and final semester at Houghton.
It was great to spend time with all my nieces and nephew. They love each other so much. It is great to watch them play together and enjoy each other so much. Plus I love all the hugs and fun I get to have with them too. I really miss them so much while I am gone because they grow up so fast and in only a few months they change a lot.
Playing in the sand was started by Jeff (my brother-in-law) when he decided he was going to make a sand castle which is seen in the pictures below. It was funny to watch this grown man playing by himself in the sand. I love that he is just a big kid. Eventually most of us helped out with the sand castle. Kaitlin and Sarah helped me make mouts around it and fill it up with water. Sienna and Joshy real just helped by destroying it, Joshy with his truck and Sienna with throwing clumps of sand at the castles. She wouldn't do much else because she would not leave the blanket, she doesn't like sand, so it was actually a big thing that she was picking it up at all.
I love my family and it was great spending sometime with them simply just to enjoy each others company.
I finally took a day and actually got some work done for my senior show. I drew out multiple designs on canvases which I am super excited about. I also gessoed some cardboard that did not make it into my suitcase. But after is all said and done I got nice and messy which I totally miss and am looking forward to making really big messes this fall.
One day this summer I got the joy and privilege of watching Sienna for a few hours. I got to the house before she woke up so that I was the one to get her ready and make her breakfast. We had lots of fun all day, especially with all the walks we took. We started with one walk where I was told how darn cute Sienna is. We also made friends with a squirrel and listened to the dogs barking which was very interesting to Sienna.
After drawing I had to go on another walk around the neighborhood. This time we had to adventure into the bush. here you can witness the bush baby in its natural habitat:
We had snack after the walk. Sienna was super cute when she sat watching the Olympics with her cup and fruit snacks. After snacks Sienna wanted to go for yet another walk, but I just sat on the ground and Sienna kept trying to put my shoes on.
Best day of the summer, seriously.
