I had large gloobs of paint left on my palette and I knew I wasn't going to be working on any other paintings and that I would be packing everything up so I found some left over canvas pad pieces and mixed the paint with lots of liquin (to make it dry fast) and created two little paintings. This was different for me since I generally plan my paintings excessively and work on them with multiple layers and details. I liked the spontaneousness of these paintings, but I don't think I could do it that often; I still prefer to plan.

I designed this yesterday in class, drew it in the afternoon, and finished during Lost (actually, during the commercials between Lost). I think I will leave it with just the sharp lines, but again there is a small chance that there will be a tint added to it in the fall, but for now it is complete. And just so you know: it is all one coil which makes me happy.

Sunday was the first really beautiful day of Mayterm and we decided that it would be a sin to stay inside to do our homework so we drove around to find some lovely patch of earth to relax in. We found a large beautiful field with some really tall grass which hide us as we laid down on our blankets. We did get a little work done, but napping was much nicer. I did get a little pink on my shoulders since they haven't seen the sun in months, but that was nothing compared to my red-head friend, she's crispy now.
I finished my second interlacing. This one gave me some challenges with the very straight edges that really needed to be crisp because of the contrasting coil that would interlace through it in the end. Once I got all the edges crisp with the acrylic paint I was able to use oil paint to put in the shadows where the coil intersects itself. Then I drew in the new organic coil and finally decided to painting it teal. I wasn't sure what color I wanted to make it so when I was going through my colors trying to find an opaque color (so that I would only have to paint to coil in one layer) I found this teal that I had never used before, and since it is my favorite color I decided to use it (I'm not sure how I went all this time without painting with my favorite color, though I do think there will be more paintings with this color in the future.
I also finished this, my third interlacing. I wasn't sure about keeping it this split pea green, but the more I worked with is I realized that I really liked it. I did decided to keep it more simple and left out any shading, giving the definition in the intersections by adding a pencil out line. The very last layer was just an oil green glaze that I just put around the boarder to make it stand out.
This is not done yet, but almost. This is the one that I had wanted to make red, but got frustrated with pink and decided to make it grey-black-and-white. I got to the grey but I needed to white wash the design (that's the first picture) to get rid of the pink that was still showing through. I was getting ready to paint it black when I found that my Prussian blue was very dark, almost black, and I thought that would be much more interesting than just black. But then I had a new problem in that grey would look awful with the blue but I had already done a blue interlacing and didn't want two. While have this dilemma I found that I had a red that didn't turn pink when glazed over white. I put this over the whole design which mixed with the blue to make a rich purplish black. Now I am working on putting in shadows.
These two got the backgrounds finished with a layer of oil paint. I like the way they turned out because I decided to not make a solid color backgrounds but ones that have a slight variation. The yellow one starts almost white in the center and then fades out to bright yellow on the edges. The orange one starts in the center with a very red-orange and fades to having a very yellow-orange on the edges. Now all I have to go over the coils with an oil layer and these will be done too. But I still need two more for the whole project.
We get really bored here during Mayterm, so one night we realized that there was an unusual amount of picnic tables. Because of this we thought we would rearrange them in an artistic way. Thus we made tunnels / archways with the tables. They were masterpieces, but sadly were taken down by lunch time the next day.

After finals Job came down and surprised me. He had promised that he would come and visit me before the end of the semester but I didn't think that it would actually happen. But he made it and we had a fun night.
I finally finished this painting. It was only a few more hours of work but I had put it off for so long I wasn't sure if I would actually get it done. I am happy with the way it turned out. I wasn't sure if I would like making a rose without making it look perfectly like a real rose; I figured I would ruin it in trying to make it slightly abstract, but I am happy to say that I didn't ruin it.
I finished this one so that the girl who had commissioned it would have before she left after graduation. I finished and was pleased with the results, but the girl who had me paint no longer wanted to pay what we had a agreed upon. Her mom wanted to pay half of what I have priced it at. That was just unbelievable to me and very disappointing to have her back out. But now I still have this painting for sale and hopefully I can sell it.
I started the fourth layer on this painting, it is not a complete layer yet but it is progress. I am liking the way it is looking even though it is going quite a bit darker than I had originally planned. Darker both in color and in context as well. My friend Nate saw it and thinks that I have problems; he said it's disturbing.
Jordan's 21st birthday was Monday so we threw him a surprise party, but he kinda figured it out in the end because some of the planners are very bad at being discrete. But even though he figured it was happening we still had a fun time distracting him from going to his house and even more fun hanging out with friends, some of which were leaving the next morning so it was nice to spend time all together one last time.
